Calling in the Masculine: Why We Need More Men in Sound Healing

Since we first created the Sound of Being™ Facilitator Training curriculum in 2017, we have now facilitated 14 Level 1 trainings, and over those years there has been something interesting to witness.

Two of our cohorts have had no male students at all. In almost every other training, there has been just one man in the room alongside Matty.

We don’t share this because we think every training needs to have equal numbers of men and women, or because we want to make comparisons about who is drawn to this work. It has simply made us curious about why the wider wellness and sound healing spaces continue to be predominantly female, and about what becomes possible when more men feel welcome to step into them.

Because from what we have witnessed, the masculine has an incredibly important place here.

Holding both the masculine and feminine

Our work has always held an awareness of both masculine and feminine energies.

Within the Vedic traditions that have influenced so much of our own practice, we work with the principles of Shiva and Shakti. Shiva representing consciousness, stillness, presence and structure, and Shakti representing energy, movement, creativity and flow.

These aren’t rigid ideas about what it means to be a man or a woman. They are qualities that exist within all of us.

For us, the beauty is not in choosing one over the other, but in allowing them to meet.

Structure alongside intuition. Strength alongside sensitivity. Direction alongside surrender. Stillness alongside movement.

We feel this within sound itself, and we feel it within the spaces we create.

What we have witnessed in men

Over the years, it has been incredibly beautiful to witness what can unfold when men enter this work.

Often they arrive for very different reasons and from very different backgrounds. Some are musicians. Some are already working therapeutically. Some have been exploring sound intuitively and want a stronger foundation beneath what they are doing. Others are simply at a point in their lives where they feel called towards something deeper.

What they discover isn’t necessarily about becoming more “spiritual” or learning how to become a healer.

Often it is much simpler than that.

It is learning how to be present.

Learning to listen.

Learning to stay with another person without immediately needing to fix what is happening.

Learning that sensitivity doesn’t diminish strength and that vulnerability doesn’t require us to lose our groundedness.

Sound can become an incredible doorway into those places because it allows us to experience something before we necessarily have the language to explain it.

The healing potential of safe masculine presence

Something else we have witnessed through this work is the impact that grounded, safe masculine presence can have within a room.

We see this through the way Matty holds space within our trainings and sessions, and through the men who have trained with us over the years.

For many women, experiences of the masculine have not always felt safe. This doesn’t mean that men entering healing spaces are responsible for healing those experiences, nor do we believe men need to take on the role of rescuing or fixing anyone.

Sometimes the healing is simply in experiencing something different.

A man who can remain present with emotion without shutting it down.

A man who can witness vulnerability without needing something from it.

A man who can hold strength and softness at the same time.

A man who can listen without immediately trying to provide the answer.

There can be something profoundly restorative in that experience, just as there can be profound healing for men in discovering that these qualities have always been available to them too.

And we feel our communities need more of this.

You don’t need to come from the wellness world

Perhaps one of the things we would most love men to know about our training is that you don’t need to already identify with the wellness industry to belong in the room.

Maybe you are a musician who has become curious about the therapeutic possibilities of sound.

Maybe you already work as a therapist, bodyworker, yoga teacher, coach, PT or practitioner and you are looking for another way to support the people you work with.

Maybe you have been facilitating sound intuitively without formal training and feel ready to develop more understanding, structure and confidence around what you are doing.

Or perhaps your life currently looks nothing like this world.

You might work in corporate.

You might be a carpenter, builder, electrician or plumber.

You might be a father, a business owner, a creative, or simply someone questioning what the next part of your life might look like.

There is no particular identity you need to adopt before stepping into this work.

You don’t need to arrive as a “healer”.

You don’t need to know how to play instruments.

You don’t need to be able to meditate for hours or know the language of energy and consciousness.

Our training is designed to meet people where they are.

More than learning to play instruments

Our 200-hour Sound of Being™ Level 1 Facilitator Training certainly teaches sound.

You learn about instruments, music, listening, resonance and how to create and facilitate sound journeys.

But for us, learning to play instruments has never been enough.

Throughout the training we explore meditation, Vedic philosophy, energy, the nervous system, communication, facilitation, ritual and embodied personal practice because the person holding the instrument matters just as much as the instrument itself.

We are interested in what happens when you can remain grounded while someone else is moving through something difficult.

When you can listen deeply enough to respond rather than simply follow a formula.

When your own personal practice becomes part of the foundation from which you facilitate.

When sound becomes less about performance and more about relationship.

These are qualities that can move far beyond the sound healing space and into relationships, families, workplaces, communities and everyday life.

An invitation to the men who have been watching

So perhaps this is simply an invitation.

To the men who have been quietly curious about sound healing but haven’t seen themselves represented within it.

To the musicians who feel there might be another dimension to their relationship with sound.

To the practitioners who want to deepen the way they hold space.

And to the carpenters, plumbers, builders, fathers, business owners and men working in completely different worlds who simply feel something when they read this.

You are welcome here.

Not because this work needs more men instead of women, but because we believe there is something incredibly powerful when masculine and feminine are both able to meet within these spaces.

Shiva and Shakti.

Stillness and movement.

Strength and sensitivity.

Structure and flow.

We would love to see more men stepping into this work.

Our next 200-hour Sound of Being™ Level 1 Facilitator Training takes place in the Byron Shire in November 2026 and currently has two places remaining. We will also be offering two further Level 1 trainings in 2027.

If something in this has spoken to you, you can explore the training and see whether it feels like the right next step.

And if there is a man in your life who came to mind while reading this, perhaps simply send it to him.
